Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service Inc.  -  Daisy Petals Program

The Daisy petals program aims to improve the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in Perth, Western Australia, by providing culturally appropriate health assessments, support, and guidance to women in community settings, such as events and promotional days. The program is run by the Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service and is designed to target Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander females from puberty and above.

The health assessment that is offered through the program is creatively based on the analogy of a daisy. Each 'petal' of the daisy represents an element of women's health and a different station at the health check. The health check stations include:

  • weight, height and waist measurement
  • blood pressure, haemoglobin, and blood sugar testing
  • smoking alcohol and other drugs
  • social and emotional wellbeing
  • diet and physical activity
  • sexual health
  • breast and cervical screening
  • dental health.

The presence of the program at community events provides an opportunity for women to come together in a relaxed and culturally sensitive environment. In addition to having a health check, support and guidance is given to the women in seeking appropriate medical care and advice. The program is delivered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers, nurses, and non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nursing staff.

As of April 2013, the program had delivered approximately 150 health checks to women in the Perth community. Of this 150, the majority were given personalised lifestyle modification advice depending on their individual needs. Many were also referred to their healthcare provider relating to findings such a poor glycaemic control, low iron, and overdue pap smears and mammograms.

Evaluation surveys were distributed to program participants with a 65% response rate. Feedback has been positive with the majority of respondents reporting that they were 'highly satisfied with the assessment' and would be 'making lifestyle changes as a result of the assessment'.
